A Word from Ffiona Rees

Four long (short) years ago we were in the midst of a global pandemic, and we couldn’t imagine a more challenging admission cycle – and yet here we are.

Throughout March and April, like many of our colleagues across the nation, our thoughts and energies were focused on an assortment of financial aid difficulties as we worked to ensure our students have the necessary information needed to make their enrollment decisions (please see the Financial Aid Update below for more details).

Then as May arrived, the UCLA campus community was shaken to its core. The past two weeks have been among the most painful Bruins have ever experienced. At UCLA, we hold open dialogue and the right to peaceful protest as fundamental principles of our community. We believe in the power of respectful discourse and understand that organized demonstrations can serve as a vital platform for expressing diverse perspectives. And we must also prioritize the health, safety and well-being of our community members. Trying to balance these things lay behind the decisions UCLA made this spring with regard to an encampment that was set up on our campus, and they continue to guide the investments in and changes to campus security UCLA has made since.

The recent disruption in UCLA’s operations has meant our office has canceled, postponed, or changed to virtual programming for several events over the last few weeks. After much debate, and with a very heavy heart, we made the decision to transition our Transfer Bruin Day originally scheduled for May 11 to a virtual event on May 17. Our admitted transfer students deserve to celebrate their accomplishments and we intend to provide that for them, albeit in a different method than originally planned.

I urge you to visit UCLA Chancellor's messages to read Chancellor Block’s recent messages to the Bruin community. In them, he shares UCLA’s approach to the encampment and the decision to remove it, as well as the action steps we’re taking right now to make our campus safer, including instituting a new Office of Campus Safety. We’ll also share this information with admitted students.

While UCLA is not alone in managing such challenges this year, I still thank you for all of your well-wishes and understanding as we navigate through these emotional and difficult times together. UCLA is a wonderful place to learn and I’m very hopeful our university can soon begin to heal from this. Your partnership is always important to me, but even more so as we all struggle through these divisive times.

With gratitude,

Financial Aid Update

Throughout the last few months, we’ve adapted to the many delays and changes during the rollout of the new FAFSA, always with the guiding principle of how best to support students and families. We know you’ve been on the frontlines during this trying time as you help students navigate the new FAFSA, so let us say a deep and heartfelt “thank you!”

  • The University of California has extended the deadline for first-year admitted students submitting their Statement of Intent to Register (SIR) to May 15th. UCLA financial aid offers started being released on April 19, 2024, to over 9,000 incoming first-year students, and by now almost all students have received their financial aid offers, and we are actively working with the remaining individuals.
  • The June 1st SIR deadline for transfer students remains the same as we have sent out over 4,000 aid offers to admitted transfer students. We will continue to send out new and revised aid offers as we receive new information from the Department of Education.
  • UCLA Financial Aid & Scholarships stands ready to assist all students still having difficulty filing the FAFSA, especially mixed-status families who have faced technical issues completing the new FAFSA. Please visit the UCLA Financial Aid & Scholarships website for updated guidance.

We understand the importance of financial aid throughout the college journey, and we are committed to helping our current and prospective students navigate these challenges. Frequently Asked Questions

Q. When is the Statement of Intent (SIR) deadline?

A. In an effort to support students and their families impacted by delays due to FAFSA, the SIR deadline for admitted first-year students has been extended to May 15.

Admitted transfer applicants received their Provisional Aid Letter (PAL) in a timely manner, at the time that admission notifications were released, therefore the SIR deadline for transfer admits continues to be June 1.

Q. What academic changes and updates are students required to report?

A. Students are required to report the following changes:

  • If students drop/withdraw any courses that were listed on the application
  • If students receive incomplete grades in any courses that were listed on the application
  • If students changed any courses that were listed on the application
  • If students received two or more C grades, any D or F grades
  • If transfer students receive any C grades in the major preparatory required courses
  • If first-year students’ senior year unweighted GPA falls below 3.00
  • If transfer students’ GPA dropped significantly
  • If students fail to meet the provisions of the admission contract

We strongly encourage students to report updates as soon as possible. Changes can be reported on the My Application Status website.

Q. When is the deadline for students to opt-in to the waitlist?

A. Transfer applicants must opt-in by May 15 and first-year applicants’ deadline was April 15. The waitlist is by invitation only. Students have an opportunity to provide updates, additional information and grades for courses received after the application was submitted. To be fair to all applicants, additional materials (including letters of recommendation) cannot be accepted and will not be reviewed and demonstrated interest is not considered.

Additional information for waitlisted applicants, including FAQs, can be found through the My Application Status site.

We encourage students to consider all other options and abide by those college/university deadlines as we will not be able to provide admission status updates until after the Statement of Intent (SIR).

Q. Can denied applicants request an appeal?

A. UCLA does not set aside space for students who appeal admission decisions. Since we have thoroughly reviewed every application and they have gone through extensive reviews, it is highly unlikely that an appeal will be successful. Appeals are reviewed on a case-by-case basis. For an appeal to have merit, students must share new academic and personal information, as well as information pertaining to extenuating circumstances, that had not been present in the application.

Denied transfer students can submit an appeal between May 1 – May 15.

The deadline for denied first-year students was April 1 – April 15.
