Major Preparation Requirements

Required - a minimum of six courses from

  • One course in introduction to globalization
  • One statistics course
  • At least one year of a college-level modern foreign language
  • Five courses with no more than two from any of the following three categories: 
    • Culture & Society
    • Governance & Conflict
    • Markets & Resources

Five courses, with no more than two from any of the following categories

  • Culture and society
    • Group A: Sociocultural anthropology, cultural geography, global music, world literature, culture and communication, introduction to gender studies
    • Group B: History of Asian Americans, introduction to Chicana/Chicano studies, world civilizations and cultures (social structure & contemporary conditions)
  • Governance and conflict
    • Contemporary world history, history of Africa, comparative or world politics, political theory, or introduction to sociology
  • Markets and resources
    • ​​​​​​​Introduction to economic geography, environment and sustainability, sociology of migration, microeconomics, or macroeconomics

Note: No more than one semester of foreign language may be used toward the minimum six major preparation courses required. High school language of instruction is NOT acceptable to meet major preparation requirements but may be used to satisfy the departmental foreign language requirement after matriculation. A supplemental application must be submitted during the fall term to which you were admitted.

* This major is highly selective. Demand for this major significantly exceeds space available.

* Students are classified as Pre-Global Studies until they complete the remaining preparation courses at UCLA and submit a supplemental application to the department.
