Transfer Preparation Requirements — Latin American Studies*

Major Preparation Requirements

  • Two years each of Spanish and Portuguese (or an indigenous language of Latin America)
  • Five courses from the following:
    • History of Latin America (Colonial)
    • History of Latin America (Modern)
    • Latin American Cultures
    • Sociocultural anthropology
    • Cultural geography
    • Contemporary world history
    • World literature
    • Comparative politics
    • Economic geography
    • Microeconomics
    • Macroeconomics
    • Introductory sociology

Required by end of spring before transfer

  • One year of college level Spanish or Portuguese OR at least one year of high school in which the primary language of instruction was Spanish or Portuguese. Completion of two years of college level foreign language is strongly preferred.
  • At least two of the preparatory courses listed above (in addition to foreign language).

Note: High School foreign language classes will NOT satisfy major preparation requirements.

* Students are classified as Pre-Latin American Studies until lower division preparation courses are completed at UCLA.
